Types of Renewable Energy commonly used in Africa

If you are looking forward to investing in renewable energy in Africa you are in the right place. Africa is the new hub for Renewable energy investors. Majority of Africans do not have access to electricity. This is due to the slow development and poverty rate across Africa. In this chapter I would highlight the Types of renewable energy commonly used in Africa.

Solar

In order to move Africa to a sustainable future, exclusively investing in clean and renewable Energy is the way forward. Amongst the Renewable Energy types, I would recommend Solar.

Solar Energy is the most popular renewable energy type and also the most affordable. This energy is derived from the sun though the use of photo-voltaic panel. This panel absorbs sun energy also known as solar radiation and then passes it on to an inverter resulting to Electricity.

Some of the advantages of solar Energy over other renewable energy types are:

  • It is affordable.
  • The cost drops over time.
  • It is very Durable.
  • There are lots of investment into research
  • It is cost effective.
  • It can be improved on after initial installation.

Hydroelectric

This is the oldest and the most familiar renewable energy type in Africa. There are several types of hydroelectric energy. These includes the use of dams to channel water into turbines. It is dependent on location which means it needs a flowing water source. Its biggest disadvantage is the land and wildlife impact. Most countries in Africa still depend on this source of energy.
