Different Types of Inverter Technology

There are three different types of inverter based on their output. This article would help you save cost when making an inverter purchase. Since inverters are now a necessity in our homes especially in areas with constant unannounced power outage. I would address them from an ascending order. Below is a list of the different types of inverter:

  1. THE SQUARE WAVE INVERTER
  2. THE MODIFIED SINE WAVE INVERTER (QUASI SINE WAVE INVERTER)
  3. THE PURE SINE WAVE INVERTER

THE SQUARE WAVE INVERTER

This one of the simplest inverter technologies. It converts DC to a phase shifting AC limiting it to work with only simple tools with universal motors. This also makes it the least efficient of all the inverter types and the cheapest too.

THE MODIFIED SINE WAVE INVERTER (QUASI SINE WAVE INVERTER)

The design of this type of inverter is a bit more complex compared to the square wave inverter but not as complex as the pure sine wave inverter. It experiences some pause before shifting of the wave meaning it does not make smooth transition from positive to negative but takes brief pauses and then shifts its phase.

It works well with majority of the electric appliances. However, in some of them, it may reduce efficiency. This results in slight buzzing, humming sounds or dimmer lights. Compared to sine wave inverters, the modified sine wave inverters are cheaper.

PURE SINE WAVE INVERTER

The electric circuit of a pure sine wave inverter is way more complex than that of the square and modified sine wave inverter. Rotating AC machinery generates power in a sine wave inverter. Many electrical appliances are designed for being operated on sine waves. Compared to the other inverters, sine wave inverters are 2-3 times more expensive. These inverters work best with heavier appliances. Here some of its advantages:

  • More efficiency, hence consumes less power.
  • They can be adjusted according to your personal power requirements, since several types are available with different power outputs.
  • The output of a pure sine wave inverter is very reliable, but at the same time, there is a trade-off between price and reliability.
  • Due to these reasons they are the best option for sensitive equipment.
